Telemedicine

Over the past decade, the Northwest Kansas Health Alliance has worked diligently to develop a strong telemedicine system to support the hospitals within the network and to promote efficiency and effectiveness. Routinely, small rural hospitals are at a distinct disadvantage when it comes to recruiting professional staff and promoting staff involvement in outside activities such as meetings and training. Distance, location and facility size are often barriers to the recruitment of professionals such as radiologists. Staff access to training and educational meetings is limited by many factors. Due to travel times, a two hour meeting can consume the entire day for many healthcare leaders of rural facilities.

To overcome some of these barriers, the members of the Northwest Kansas Health Alliance have linked members through telemedicine services and expanded them beyond the traditional boundaries of teleradiology. Today, the network conducts meetings and staff training via telephone lines, holds specialty clinics and promotes local access to care via remote EKG monitoring and Tele-Rehab.
